The Weakness of Personal Websites
Writing blog posts on this Lefantas made me realize that personal websites are at a significant disadvantage when it comes to SEO. No doubt about it. Even after registering with Google Search Console and manually requesting indexing, my pages never rank high in search results. Even searching with very specific keywords yields no results. This means the articles I put effort into writing simply don’t get read.
So, if you truly want your articles to reach a wide audience, I think the best approach is to use platforms like Hatena Blog or note in Japan, or Medium internationally. For technical articles, Zenn or dev.to are great options. These platforms are strong in SEO and already have a large user base, making it easier for articles to be discovered.
Of course, personal websites do have the advantage of greater freedom. You can design them however you like, and there are no ads whatsoever. However, they have the weaknesses mentioned above. No matter how hard you try as an individual, SEO is incredibly difficult to improve on your own.
So, I think personal websites are best used for writing as a hobby or for personal satisfaction. If you want to reach a wider audience, it’s better to write somewhere else.
On a different note, I recently started using Reddit. When I asked a technical question about Godot, many people from overseas responded with helpful answers. That made me really happy. I’m thinking of continuing to use Reddit going forward.
